Silver Jewellery Hallmarking: From September 1, New Rules Come Into Effect

The government is now extending hallmarking to silver ornaments, much like it did with gold jewellery. Starting September 1, 2025, a new hallmarking system will apply to silver jewellery in India. While it won’t be mandatory in the beginning, customers will have the option to buy either hallmarked or non-hallmarked silver ornaments.
What’s New in the Rule?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced six new purity standards for silver: 800, 835, 900, 925, 970, and 990. Every hallmarked jewellery piece will now carry a unique six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification Number). This code will instantly confirm the purity of the item and verify its authenticity. The new system replaces the old hallmarking process and ensures greater transparency in the jewellery trade.
Why Hallmarking Matters?
Hallmarking serves as an official certification of a metal’s purity. BIS laboratories test the jewellery and stamp it with a hallmark, assuring buyers that they are getting exactly what they paid for. In the absence of hallmarking, there’s always a risk of adulteration. With the HUID number and hallmark stamp, fraudulent practices are expected to decline significantly.
Benefits for Customers
-
Buyers can use the BIS Care App to verify the HUID number under the “Verify HUID” feature.
-
It provides confidence that the jewellery matches the declared purity.
-
Makes silver jewellery purchases more reliable and safer.
Gold to Silver: Extending Purity Assurance
The government had made hallmarking mandatory for gold jewellery in 2021. Now, the same step is being taken for silver ornaments, with the aim of making the jewellery market more transparent and trustworthy.
What Changes After September 1?
-
Customers will have the choice to buy hallmarked or non-hallmarked silver jewellery.
-
Experts believe that as awareness spreads, people will increasingly prefer hallmarked ornaments.
-
This will not only benefit buyers but also boost trust within the jewellery industry, leaving little room for adulteration.
👉 In short, from September 1, 2025, silver jewellery will come with a hallmark purity guarantee—bringing silver buyers the same assurance that gold buyers have enjoyed for the past few years.
