Significant Jump in September AICPI Index: Impact on DA, TA, and HRA
The AICPI index for September has reached 155.5, marking a substantial increase of 1.1 points compared to August 2026. This will have an impact on the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Traveling Allowance (TA) effective from January 2027.
There is major news for central government employees: their 'take-home' salary could see a significant boost in the coming months. The AICPI-IW (All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers) for September 2026, released by the Labour Bureau, has recorded a sharp rise of 1.1 points—climbing from 154.4 in August 2026 to 155.5. Throughout 2026, the AICPI-IW has shown a consistent upward trend, rising from 148.6 in January to 155.5 in September—a total increase of 6.9 points so far.
What is the AICPI-IW Index?
The AICPI-IW (All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers) is a metric used by the Government of India to measure inflation in the country. It serves as the basis for calculating the Dearness Allowance (DA) for serving central government employees and the Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners. It is released monthly by the Labour Bureau, which operates under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The index tracks whether the prices of daily-use commodities have increased or decreased compared to the previous month or year. As the index rises, the Dearness Allowance for government employees increases proportionally, ensuring that their purchasing power remains intact amidst rising inflation. Recently, as part of the semi-annual review for July 2026, the Central Government has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) by 3 percentage points, raising the total DA rate from 60% to 63%.
Changes in the AICPI-IW from January 2026 to September 2026:
January 2026: 148.6
February 2026: 148.5
March 2026: 149.1
April 2026: 149.9
May 2026: 150.8
June 2026: 151.9
July 2026: 153.2
August 2026: 154.4
September 2026: 155.5
The average of the AICPI-IW figures for the full 12-month period from January 2026 to December 2026 will serve as the final basis for the revision due in January 2027. Even if the AICPI-IW remains stable at 155.5 points through October, November, and December, an increase of at least 4% in the DA appears certain for January 2027, driven by the rise in the 12-month average. It should be noted that the government does not determine the DA based on a sudden spike or drop in inflation in any single month; instead, the AICPI-IW index figures for the preceding 12 months are aggregated and then divided by 12 to arrive at an average score.
