Today, the price of gold in India stands at ₹1,46,090 per 10 grams, while the price of silver is ₹2,08,340 per kilogram. Following a sharp decline yesterday (Wednesday), gold has staged a notable recovery of 1.17% on the COMEX exchange.
Gold prices continue to fall. Today, there has been a further decline of ₹2,420. As of today, Thursday, October 15, the price of 24-carat gold in the country is ₹1,46,090 per 10 grams—down from yesterday’s price of ₹1,48,510 per 10 grams. According to Bullion.co.in, the price of 22-carat gold has also decreased by ₹2,218 per 10 grams, bringing it to ₹1,33,916 per 10 grams, compared to yesterday’s price of ₹1,36,134 per 10 grams.
Decline in silver prices
The price of 925 sterling silver has been recorded at ₹1,92,715 per kilogram. Following a prolonged period of sustained gains, the price of 925 sterling silver has fallen below the psychological threshold of ₹2,00,000 for the first time. This correction in silver prices is the result of a sell-off in global markets on Wednesday, combined with profit-booking in the domestic market.
Why is gold becoming cheaper?
A strong US dollar is responsible for this decline in gold prices. The US Dollar Index has reached an 18-month high (approximately 102.57–102.73). When the dollar strengthens, it becomes more difficult for buyers using currencies like the rupee or the euro to make purchases, as payments must be settled in dollars. Consequently, the global demand for gold declines, which drives its price down.
Another contributing factor is the diminishing expectation that the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates. Inflation in the US is currently quite high, and the Federal Reserve may need to raise interest rates to bring it under control. If interest rates rise, investors tend to shift their capital out of non-interest-bearing assets—such as gold—and into US government bonds. This leads to a drop in the demand for gold, causing its price to fall.
