Buying gold and silver on Dhanteras is considered auspicious. This year, Dhanteras falls on November 6, 2026. If you are planning to purchase 10 grams of gold or 1 kilogram of silver, it is worth considering which metal might see a greater price increase over the next 1, 3, and 5 years. Where should you invest—in gold or silver?

What are the current prices of gold and silver?
As of 3:45 PM on November 5, 2026, the futures price for gold (for December 2026 delivery) on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) stood at ₹1,44,865 for 10 grams. Meanwhile, the futures price for silver was trading at ₹1,88,720 per kilogram. Commodity expert Anuj Gupta suggests that the prices of both precious metals could rise in the coming years. However, he notes that silver is likely to experience greater price volatility compared to gold.

How much could gold appreciate over 5 years?
According to a Mint report, the price of gold could reach ₹1.75 lakh per 10 grams by November 2027. By November 2029, it could climb to ₹2.15 lakh, and by November 2031, it could reach ₹2.60 lakh. This implies that, compared to current levels, the price of gold could see an increase of approximately 79.5% over the next 5 years.

Expectations for a sharper rise in silver prices
The report further suggests that the price of silver could reach ₹2.60 lakh per kilogram by November 2027. Furthermore, it could rise to ₹3.10 lakh by November 2029 and reach ₹3.50 lakh by November 2031. Based on these projections, silver could potentially yield returns of approximately 37.8% over the next year, 64.3% over three years, and 85.5% over five years. However, these are merely estimates, and actual market prices may differ.

What do other experts say?
A report by Mint includes projections from N.S. Ramaswamy, Head of Commodities and CRM at Ventura, which also point toward an increase in gold and silver prices. According to him, the price of gold could reach ₹1.75 lakh per 10 grams within the next year. Subsequently, it might adjust to ₹1.65 lakh by November 2029, before potentially reaching ₹2 lakh by November 2031. Meanwhile, the price of silver is projected to reach ₹2.50 lakh per kilogram by November 2027, ₹2.25 lakh by November 2029, and ₹4 lakh by November 2031.

Should you buy gold or silver this Dhanteras?
Experts suggest that if you are looking for a long-term investment, gold may be the better option. Over the past 20 years, gold has delivered an average annual return of 15–16%. Many central banks globally are also increasing their gold reserves. Furthermore, investors are turning to gold due to concerns surrounding global tensions and rising government debt.

On the other hand, while silver offers higher potential for gains, it also carries greater risk. Over the last 10 years, silver has yielded an average annual return of about 16%, and approximately 11% over the last 20 years. However, periods of sharp price increases in silver have often been followed by significant declines. At one point, its price fell by more than 55% from its peak (recorded in January 2026).
