Shorter Summer Break Ahead: Classes to Resume from the Third Week of June; Find Out Why
Rajasthan Summer Vacation 2026: For the 2026-27 academic session in Rajasthan, the duration of summer vacations has been reduced to 35 days. Regular classes will now commence as early as June 21.
The intensity of the summer heat is rising across the country. Amidst this, significant news has emerged from Rajasthan for students. For millions of children in the state, this year's summer vacation will not be as long as it has been in the past. While releasing the new academic calendar for the 2026-27 session, the Education Department has curtailed the duration of the summer holidays. Now, both government and private schools will remain closed only from May 17 to June 20, with regular classes resuming on June 21.
Previously, students enjoyed a summer vacation of approximately 45 days; however, this period has now been reduced to 35 days. The Education Department states that this decision was taken to ensure that academic instruction proceeds on schedule and more effectively, thereby preventing any delays in the commencement of the session and ensuring that the month of June is not wasted.
How Was It Until Now?
In previous years, schools would open on June 21 for just a single day—specifically to observe International Yoga Day. Following the yoga program, schools would close once again, and regular academic instruction would only begin on July 1. Consequently, the final week of June would pass by almost entirely unutilized.
This time, this arrangement has been completely overhauled. Now, when schools open on June 21, International Yoga Day will be celebrated on that very day, and regular classes will commence simultaneously.
Admission Dates Also Finalized
According to the new calendar, July 11, 2026, has been set as the final deadline for admissions into classes 9 through 12. Meanwhile, admissions for classes 1 through 8 will remain open throughout the entire academic year. This measure will facilitate schools in completing the admission process in a timely manner.
Principals' Authority to Grant Leave Also Curtailed
The Education Department has also introduced changes regarding the discretionary powers of school principals. Previously, principals could declare two local holidays at their own discretion; however, they will now be able to declare only one such local holiday.
Teachers' Organizations Express Concern
Teachers' organizations have expressed concern following this decision. They argue that during the months of May and June, temperatures in many parts of Rajasthan soar above 45 degrees Celsius. Under such conditions, attending school is detrimental to the children's health. The teachers' organizations have urged the government to reconsider this decision.
