Seniors Being Defrauded Under the Guise of Pensioner Life Certificate Updates—Find Out How..
Pensioner Life Certificate Update Scam: In today's digital era—where conveniences for people have increased significantly—scammers have also become increasingly active. Numerous reports are emerging regarding fraud being perpetrated against the elderly under the guise of updating their Pensioner Life Certificates. To avoid falling victim to this scam, it is crucial to understand how these criminals lay their traps and how a simple act of caution on your part can safeguard your bank account. Addressing this issue, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre has posted a warning via its official 'X' (formerly Twitter) handle, urging the public to remain vigilant.
How is the Scam Being Executed?
According to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre's post on 'X', scammers pose as bank representatives or pension officers and contact elderly individuals via phone calls or text messages. They then instill fear by claiming that the recipient's Life Certificate has not been updated and that their pension payments will be suspended. Terrified by this threat, unsuspecting elderly individuals often fall into the trap. Subsequently, using fraudulent links, APK files, or text messages, the scammers solicit sensitive information such as OTPs, bank account details, and Aadhaar details from the victims. As soon as the scammers obtain these details, they proceed to drain funds from the victims' bank accounts.
How to Avoid Fraud
The government never requests or facilitates the updating of Life Certificates via phone calls or WhatsApp.
Never share your OTP, PIN, or bank account details with any unknown individual.
Refrain from downloading any unknown links or APK files received from suspicious phone numbers.
Update your Life Certificate exclusively through official channels: http://jeevanpramaan.gov.in, the official mobile application, authorized banks, or post offices.
Always download the official application from the Google Play Store, the Apple App Store, or the official website.
What to Do If You Fall Victim to a Scam?
If you fall victim to any form of cybercrime or fraud, report it immediately at cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline number 1930.
