Senior Citizen Pension Update: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced a significant increase in pensions for senior citizens, with over 5.3 lakh elderly residents set to receive ₹2,500 monthly. This move includes the addition of 80,000 new pension accounts and comes as a notable relief for the elderly in the capital.

A Long-Awaited Pension Boost

Kejriwal revealed that when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in 2015, around 3.32 lakh seniors were receiving pensions. The number increased to 4.5 lakh under AAP's governance, and now with 80,000 new additions, 5.3 lakh senior citizens will benefit from the scheme.

Why Delhi Seniors Stand Out

The AAP government has ensured pensions are notably higher compared to other states. While Delhi seniors aged 60 to 69 receive ₹2,000, those above 70 years will get ₹2,500. This marks a stark contrast with BJP-led states, where pensions range between ₹500 and ₹1,000. Kejriwal emphasized that AAP's "single-engine" government focuses on welfare, unlike the "double-engine" BJP governments, which he claimed offer meager support.

Kejriwal’s Assurance to Delhi’s Elderly

“Today, I am thrilled that pensions for around 5.5 lakh senior citizens in Delhi have resumed. The BJP had shamefully conspired to halt these pensions, but now your son (referring to himself) is here to ensure all your needs are met,” said Kejriwal. He also highlighted the overwhelming response to the newly launched pension portal, which received 10,000 applications within 24 hours.

Pension Comparison Across States

Kejriwal showcased Delhi's leadership in senior citizen welfare by comparing pensions across states:

  • Rajasthan: ₹1,150
  • Uttar Pradesh: ₹1,000
  • Gujarat: ₹700
  • Chhattisgarh: ₹650
  • Maharashtra: ₹600
  • Odisha: ₹300
  • Assam & Goa: ₹500

The AAP government’s initiative stands as a testament to its commitment to improving the lives of Delhi’s elderly, making pensions in Delhi among the most generous in the country.
