Officers working as Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) come under the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). The initial appointment of an SDM is usually through the state civil service examination. When a person serves as an SDM, he has various administrative responsibilities, such as maintaining law and order, revenue administration and conducting development programmes.

Promotion Process

Normally, an SDM can reach the following positions during his service.

Assistant Collector: This is the initial level, where the SDM gets the opportunity to play an important role in the district administration.

Collector: If an SDM shows excellence in his services and gains experience, he can be promoted to the post of Collector. The Collector is the head of the administration at the district level.

District Magistrate: This is a higher post, in which the officer has to conduct the administrative activities of the entire district.

Additional Secretary or Secretary: Some officers can also be appointed as Additional Secretary or Secretary in the state government, which are the highest level administrative roles.

Post Retirement Prospects

Even after retirement, many former SDMs can be given important roles in various commissions, tribunals or public sector boards. For instance, they can also be appointed to constitutional posts like Governor or Lieutenant Governor. Thus, an SDM can reach many important and prestigious positions during his career and continue to serve in respectable roles even after retirement.
