Scammers are using this method to steal banking details; iPhone and Android users are at risk, the FBI warns
Cases are increasing worldwide where scammers impersonate bank officials and contact people to steal their banking details. The FBI has issued a public warning, urging people to remain vigilant.
In recent times, online fraud cases have increased worldwide. Scammers are trying new methods to defraud people. Now, they are contacting people in a new way to steal their banking details. In light of the increasing number of such cases worldwide, the FBI has issued a warning for iPhone and Android users. The agency has urged mobile users to be vigilant against such scams.
This is how scammers are luring people into their trap.
The agency stated that scammers are sending messages, emails, and calls impersonating banks or insurance companies. Their goal is to obtain users' online banking details. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, thousands of complaints have been filed regarding such cases since January of this year. People have suffered financial losses of ₹2,341 crore in these cases.
This is how the scam happens.
Scammers contact users by posing as bank officials, etc., and attempt to obtain their banking details by intimidating or luring them. Once they gain access to a user's account, they immediately transfer the funds to various accounts and, often, cryptocurrency wallets. Furthermore, they change the account password, taking complete control of the account, leaving the victim with no recourse.
How to avoid such scams?
The FBI has urged people to be vigilant and secure their online accounts.
Do not share personal information online or with suspicious or unknown individuals.
Use strong and unique passwords for each account.
Enable multi-factor authentication where possible.
Always type in the URL manually to open the banking page. Verify the page displayed in search engine results before opening it.
