Scammers are defrauding people in the name of voter list updates. One mistake can lead to significant losses. Stay safe.
The Election Commission is currently working to update voter lists in many parts of the country. Scammers are also looking to take advantage of this process to defraud people.
Electoral roll revisions are currently underway in many parts of the country. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are going door-to-door to get voters to fill out SIR forms. Cybercriminals are also monitoring this official process and trying to lure people into their trap. They call people posing as verification team officials and ask them to share their OTP for verification. This is a complete scam, and the SIR process does not require an OTP.
No OTP Required for Voter List Updation
Note: The voter list update exercise being conducted by the Election Commission does not require an OTP. In this, BLOs go door-to-door to fill out SIR forms. They have the authority to collect your phone number and Aadhaar details, but an OTP is not required for this entire process. Therefore, if someone calls you and asks you to share an OTP to complete this process, be cautious.
This is how the scam is being perpetrated.
In the latest scam, cybercriminals ask for a phone OTP for form verification. This OTP is not for the voter list update exercise. Scammers can use this OTP to carry out illegal transactions or steal your personal data. Therefore, it is important to be cautious of this scam.
How to avoid such scams?
Never share the OTP or your personal information with any unknown or suspicious person.
The entire SIR process is offline. In this, the BLO visits your home. Therefore, be cautious of any suspicious emails or messages in the name of SIR.
