Scam: You've received a WhatsApp message from the RBI! You can get your money back even from a closed account..
Cyber fraud cases have been steadily increasing in the country for quite some time, and now fraudsters have launched a new scam in the name of the RBI. In this scheme, people are threatened by sending voice messages, SMS, or videos claiming suspicious transactions have occurred on their bank accounts or credit cards, or by attempting to provide information about new RBI regulations through videos. Sometimes, these fraudsters even claim that if immediate action is not taken, their accounts will be closed. In panic, many people believe these messages and share their personal information.
Most importantly, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) never asks for personal information from customers through calls, videos, messages, or emails, nor does it share any official information in this manner. Nor does it ask for clicking a link or providing an OTP to prevent any action.
RBI Video Scam
You will receive a message from a number that appears to be verified, along with a video detailing the benefits the RBI is bringing to you...
How Fraud is Perpetrated in the Name of the RBI
You will receive a message from a WhatsApp number that appears to be shared by the RBI. Yes, along with the message purporting to be from the Reserve Bank of India, you will receive an alert message, such as "Have you forgotten about keeping money in your old bank accounts?", along with a photo or video. People may be so confused by this alert message that they may click on the photo or video. But this is where you will become a victim of fraud. In reality, these photos and videos can be used to steal money from your account or hack your phone. In fact, the fraudulent messages sent by the RBI claim that your money will be returned from a closed account.
How to Pay Attention
If you check this, you'll see a number below that clearly indicates that hackers are eyeing your money. This means that this message wasn't sent by the RBI, but by hackers, so they can defraud you through videos and photos by spreading awareness in the name of the RBI. It's also worth noting that the RBI never sends such messages via WhatsApp or other platforms.
What to Do to Avoid Fraud
Fraudulent messages sent by the RBI are constantly claiming that your money will be returned from a closed account. People immediately click on them upon reading them, and greedily lose all their money. Therefore, don't click on any suspicious links, even if they appear to be official. So, the question arises: how to avoid this fraud? If you ever receive such a message, block the number and immediately inform your bank. Then, file a complaint on the RBI's Sachet Portal or call the national cyber helpline 1930 immediately.
The message will read:
Have you forgotten about money in your old bank accounts?
The RBI can help you get it back!
If you or any of your family members have a bank account that has been inactive for more than 10 years, the funds in it may be held in the RBI's Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund—but you can still claim them.
