PIB Fact Check: Every day, a variety of photos, videos, and messages go viral on social media. Many of these posts contain shocking claims. Some messages also include suspicious links, clicking on which could lead to fraud. Similarly, a message is currently going viral on social media claiming that if you don't update your Aadhaar, your SBI YONO app will be blocked. It is asking users to update their Aadhaar by downloading an APK file. If you have received such a message, you need to be vigilant.

The government's official fact-checking agency, PIB Fact Check, has clarified that this viral message is fake. PIB has urged people not to download APK files. PIB has advised emailing suspicious messages to report.phishing@sbi.co.in.

What is an APK file?

An APK file is essentially an Android app file, but fraudsters often hide malware within it. Once a person downloads and installs it, fraudsters can remotely access their phone. This allows them to read messages, capture OTPs, and even attempt to withdraw money from their bank accounts.
