SBI YONO: If you don't update your Aadhaar card, will your SBI YONO app be blocked?
A message is rapidly going viral on WhatsApp and other social media platforms these days, causing panic among many State Bank of India (SBI) customers. The message claims that SBI users need to immediately download and install an APK file to update their Aadhaar-linked KYC details. The message also warns that if this is not done, the SBI YONO app will be shut down.
This claim has confused many SBI customers, as they were unsure whether the message was true or false. This prompted the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-checking team to intervene. On social media, the PIB fact-checking team stated that this information is completely false. The PIB's message read that a message is being circulated on social media in the name of SBI, claiming that users need to download and install an APK file to update their Aadhaar details. It also states that if the Aadhaar details are not updated, the SBI YONO app will be shut down.
PIB Fact Check
The PIB's message clearly states that this claim is completely false. Do not download any APK file or share your personal, banking, or Aadhaar-related information. SBI does not ask for such information. SBI has also clarified through a post on X (formerly Twitter) that it does not ask its customers to download APK files or update Aadhaar details through links sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or email.
According to the bank, fraudsters are spreading fake APK links in the name of SBI YONO, claiming that it is for Aadhaar or KYC updates. The bank says that once this app is installed on the phone, it can steal your crucial information, such as bank login details, OTPs, and personal data. This can lead to unauthorized transactions and financial losses.
SBI Issues Warning
SBI has stated that scammers are sending fake APK links in the name of banking app updates. The PIB fact-checking team has also identified this as a method of financial fraud and appealed to customers not to click on any such links. The bank has clearly stated that the app should always be downloaded only from the Play Store or the App Store.
