The country's largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), is gearing up for a massive hiring drive. Bank Chairman C.S. Setty has clarified that the bank is focusing on large-scale expansion. This will directly benefit the lakhs of young people aspiring to build a career in the banking sector. The bank is not only creating new jobs but is also set to open hundreds of new branches to expand its reach across the country.

**A Wave of Job Opportunities**
According to the SBI Chairman, the bank plans to recruit approximately 11,000 to 12,000 employees—ranging from clerical to officer levels—during the current financial year. While this figure may fluctuate slightly based on retirement numbers, the management expects to provide employment to 12,000 individuals by the end of the fiscal year. The bank had also undertaken record hiring last year; according to the annual report, SBI hired a total of 25,633 people in the 2025-26 fiscal year. This included 4,640 officers, 19,340 associate-level employees, and 1,653 contractual staff members.

**Setback for IT Professionals**
Last year, the bank recruited 1,500 specialist Information Technology (IT) officers. However, there are no significant plans for large-scale IT recruitment this year. It is worth noting that by March 2026, SBI's total workforce had crossed the 2.45 lakh mark. The bank is now focusing more on clerical-level recruitment to streamline general banking operations.

**Mega Plan to Open New Branches**
SBI already boasts an extensive network across the country, yet the management believes there is still considerable scope for expansion in many regions. The bank is keeping a close watch on emerging areas where new residential colonies are being developed. It also intends to rapidly expand its presence in commercially active districts. Under this plan, a target has been set to open 200 to 250 new branches in the current financial year. The opening of new branches will provide convenience to customers.
