SBI Strike Called Off: Branches to Remain Open on May 25 and 26, Bank Issues Big Relief for Customers
Millions of customers across India can now breathe a sigh of relief as the proposed two-day strike by employees of the State Bank of India has been postponed. Concerns had been rising over possible disruption in banking services on May 25 and 26, especially amid a series of holidays that could have affected customers for nearly a week.
However, the country’s largest public sector bank has now clarified that all branches will remain open and banking operations will continue normally. The decision came after successful discussions between the bank management and employee unions.
SBI Customers Get Major Relief
Many customers were worried about visiting bank branches on May 25 and 26 due to reports of a possible employee strike. The fear intensified because the proposed strike was falling between multiple holidays.
With the strike now deferred, SBI customers will not face interruptions in regular banking services such as:
- Cash withdrawal and deposit
- Cheque clearance
- Passbook updates
- Loan-related services
- Branch banking transactions
- ATM and digital banking support
The bank has assured customers that all SBI branches across the country are functioning normally.
Holiday Schedule Had Increased Anxiety
Customer concerns had grown significantly because several holidays had already impacted banking schedules.
- May 23 and 24 fell on the second Saturday and Sunday
- Bakrid holidays are scheduled in many states on May 27 and 28
If the strike had gone ahead on May 25 and 26, banking services in several areas could have been disrupted for up to six consecutive days.
This possibility had raised fears regarding delays in cash availability, cheque settlements, and branch-related services.
SBI Releases Official Advisory
In its latest advisory, State Bank of India confirmed that the proposed employee strike has been postponed after positive talks with the employee federation.
The bank stated that:
- All branches will remain operational
- Regular banking activities will continue
- Customers do not need to worry about service disruptions
- Digital and branch banking systems will function as usual
The clarification has provided relief to crores of account holders, pensioners, salary account users, and businesses that rely heavily on SBI’s daily operations.
Why Was the Strike Planned?
The strike call had been given by the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF). According to the union, several employee-related issues had remained unresolved for a long time.
Union leaders claimed that repeated discussions with the management had failed to produce satisfactory solutions earlier, prompting the decision to announce a protest and strike.
However, the situation improved after a meeting held on May 22 at the SBI Corporate Centre in Mumbai.
Following the discussions, the union said that meaningful progress had been made on several pending matters. As a result, the strike and other agitation programs were temporarily suspended.
Key Demands Raised by SBI Employees
The employee federation had raised several important concerns related to staffing, recruitment, pensions, and transfers.
1. Recruitment Issues
The union alleged that many important positions in the bank have remained vacant for years. Employees demanded fresh recruitment drives to reduce staff shortages.
2. Outsourcing of Permanent Work
AISBISF opposed the outsourcing of permanent banking work and argued that regular operations should be handled by permanent employees instead of outsourced workers.
3. Pension-Related Concerns
The federation also raised issues related to employee pension benefits and demanded improvements in retirement-related policies.
4. Transfer Policies
Employee representatives sought better transparency and fairness in transfer procedures.
5. Security Staff Shortage
The union highlighted shortages in messenger and armed guard positions, claiming that many branches and ATMs lack adequate security staff.
According to union representatives, this shortage could affect the safety and smooth functioning of bank operations.
Banking Services Continue Normally
Since the strike has been postponed, customers can continue using all major SBI services without interruption.
These include:
- Branch banking
- ATM services
- Internet banking
- YONO app services
- UPI transactions
- Cash deposit machines
- Loan and account-related support
Experts say the resolution has helped avoid major inconvenience for customers and businesses, especially during a period already affected by holidays.
What Customers Should Know Now
Although the strike has been deferred for now, employee unions may continue discussions with management over unresolved issues in the coming weeks. Customers are advised to stay updated through official SBI announcements for any future developments.
For the moment, however, SBI has confirmed that normal banking operations are continuing across the country without any disruption.
