SBI Alerts Millions of Customers: UPI Payments to Be Unavailable Tonight for 20 Minutes

If you're an SBI customer and frequently use UPI for your digital payments, here's an important alert for you. The State Bank of India (SBI) has officially announced a brief outage of UPI services on the night of August 6, 2025, due to scheduled system maintenance.
According to SBI’s statement on its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services will be temporarily unavailable from 1:00 AM to 1:20 AM, lasting approximately 20 minutes.
Why the UPI Outage?
SBI has clarified that this short disruption is part of its technical upgrade and maintenance efforts aimed at improving user experience and service reliability. During this window, users won’t be able to make any digital transactions using UPI, which includes money transfers, online purchases, and bill payments.
While it’s a brief pause, even 20 minutes of downtime can cause inconvenience, especially for those relying on UPI for late-night payments or emergency needs. SBI has advised customers to complete any essential digital payments in advance to avoid disruption.
What SBI Said in Its Official Statement
Taking to its official social media channels, the bank stated:
"Due to scheduled maintenance activity, UPI services will remain unavailable from 01:00 hrs to 01:20 hrs IST on August 6, 2025. We regret the inconvenience caused and request our customers to plan their transactions accordingly."
This proactive alert aims to help users avoid failed transactions during the planned downtime.
Use UPI Lite as an Alternative for Small Payments
To ease the inconvenience, SBI has encouraged users to consider UPI Lite, especially for small-value transactions. UPI Lite allows faster payments directly from a user’s wallet without requiring real-time bank authentication, making it a reliable backup during maintenance windows.
What is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite is designed for low-value transactions such as:
-
Buying tea or coffee
-
Paying bus or auto fares
-
Purchasing small grocery items
Transactions are processed instantly and securely via your mobile wallet. Since the amount is deducted from a preloaded balance, it doesn't require live interaction with your bank, reducing the chances of failure during outages.
Revised Transaction Limits for UPI Lite
To enhance its usability, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) revised the transaction limits for UPI Lite in December 2024:
-
Per transaction limit: ₹1,000
-
Total wallet balance limit: ₹5,000
Earlier, the limits were ₹500 per transaction and ₹2,000 as the maximum wallet balance. The increased cap makes UPI Lite more versatile for everyday use.
Plan Ahead to Avoid Last-Minute Hassles
Even though the downtime is scheduled for just 20 minutes, SBI recommends customers to finish important transactions well in advance, especially if you're planning any bill payments, ticket bookings, or online shopping tonight.
A sudden requirement for digital payment during the maintenance window might lead to failed transactions or delays. Hence, it's wise to complete time-sensitive payments before 1:00 AM on August 6.
Final Words
As India increasingly moves towards a cashless economy, uninterrupted digital services are critical. While SBI’s UPI outage is only a minor disruption, the bank’s proactive communication is commendable and ensures that users are not caught off guard.
