You will be surprised to know that saying thank you, please is putting more load on ChatGPT's server, which is also increasing the electricity cost. We are not saying this, but OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself has said it. Actually, should we be polite i.e. say 'Please' and 'Thank You' while talking to Artificial Intelligence (AI)? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has recently given an interesting answer to this question.

A user asked on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) whether OpenAI has to spend more by talking to ChatGPT in polite language. To this, Sam Altman replied, "About millions of dollars, but it is money well spent." Altman said that when users use words like 'Please', and 'Thank You', ChatGPT has to understand these words and prepare a complete answer accordingly. This increases the processing load, which also increases the company's electricity and server costs.

Is it necessary to be polite with AI?

On this issue, many design experts believe that talking politely to AI is the right habit. According to Microsoft design manager Curtis Beavers, "When you use polite and positive language, AI also tries to give cooperative and respectful answers." A memo from Microsoft WorkLab also stated, "When AI recognizes politeness in your questions, it answers in more professional and polite language." That is, the tone of your language also affects the answers of AI.

AI is a predictive system like the auto-complete suggestion that comes when you type on your phone, only in a much more intelligent form. Therefore, the quality, politeness, and clarity of your language directly affect the quality of AI's answers.
