UPI Fraud News: Nowadays, people are falling victim to various new types of fraud. This article outlines simple measures to help you avoid UPI fraud. Read on to learn how you can keep yourself safe.
UPI Fraud: The times have changed completely. While in the past, people often struggled to use mobile phones effectively, today everyone not only uses mobile devices with ease but, in this digital era, also transfers money to one another effortlessly using UPI (Unified Payments Interface). Although UPI has simplified financial transactions in the digital age, millions of people remain targets for cyber fraudsters due to the rising prevalence of cybercrime. These criminals prey on unsuspecting individuals, draining their bank accounts with alarming ease.
1. A PIN Is Solely for Sending Money
Always keep in mind that your UPI PIN is *only* used for sending money. Conversely, you never need to enter your UPI PIN to *receive* money. If a stranger asks you for your PIN under the pretext of sending you money, recognize immediately—without any hesitation—that they are attempting to defraud you.
2. Avoid Screen-Sharing Apps
Furthermore, many fraudsters—often posing as bank officials—will advise you to download screen-sharing applications such as 'AnyDesk' or 'TeamViewer.' These apps grant them remote access to your phone, enabling them to easily drain your bank account. If anyone instructs you to download these apps immediately, make every effort to avoid doing so.
3. Do Not Scan Unknown QR Codes
Many fraudsters use social media platforms or WhatsApp to lure people with enticing offers or lottery schemes, urging them to scan a QR code. This, too, is a common tactic employed by cyber criminals. By scanning such codes, you leave your bank account vulnerable, allowing criminals to drain your funds with extreme ease. Therefore, whenever someone sends you a QR code via WhatsApp or any other social media platform, politely decline it.
4. Always Maintain the Confidentiality of Your UPI ID and PIN
It is extremely important to change your UPI PIN periodically. Once changed, do not share it with anyone—not even by mistake. Furthermore, always keep the OTP (One Time Password) received on your phone strictly confidential.
5. Do Not Click on Spam Warnings or Unverified Links
Most UPI apps issue a 'Spam Warning' for suspicious payment requests. Do not ignore such warnings. Additionally, refrain from hastily clicking on any suspicious links received via SMS; doing so could expose you to significant risks.
What to Do in Case of Fraud?
If you fall victim to any form of fraud, do not panic. First, call 1930 or visit www.cybercrime.gov.in to register your complaint. Additionally, inform your bank immediately to have your UPI account blocked, and do not forget to file an FIR with the police.
