Rs 5,000 to be credited to farmers' accounts before Diwali; major decision by the Maharashtra government..
A lack of rainfall in Maharashtra this year has significantly heightened concerns among farmers. With crops withering in the fields, the luster of the upcoming festive season appeared to be fading. However, just before Diwali, some very welcome news has emerged for the state’s farmers. The government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has decided to provide financial assistance to farmers grappling with a severe drought. It has been announced that an advance payment of ₹5,000 will be transferred into the bank accounts of these farmers ahead of Diwali.
Currently, several parts of the state are enduring an acute water crisis. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis convened a crucial cabinet meeting at the Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. The primary agenda was to help farmers navigate these difficult times. It was determined that providing immediate relief to drought-affected farmers was of the utmost importance. With the festival of Diwali fast approaching, the government approved an advance disbursement of ₹5,000 without any delay.
Why was the drought declared ahead of schedule?
The government has also introduced a significant shift in its operational approach. Typically, a formal declaration of drought in Maharashtra occurs toward the end of November. This year, however, the situation is so dire that the government had to depart from this tradition. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis explained that, given the current circumstances, the state government declared a drought as early as October. The necessary government resolution (GR) to this effect has also been issued.
The government was well aware that the standard administrative process for declaring a drought is time-consuming. Had the government waited for all the paperwork to be completed, the farmers' Diwali celebrations would have been severely impacted. Keeping this in mind, the cabinet decided that while other procedural formalities could follow, the priority should be to transfer the advance funds to the farmers' accounts, ensuring they can celebrate the festival properly.
40 new talukas added to the drought-affected list.
The scope of the drought continues to expand. Based on the latest reports received by the government, 40 additional talukas in Maharashtra have been declared drought-affected. The situation in these areas is dire, with crops on the verge of total destruction. The government’s primary focus is to ensure that relief reaches the farmers in these regions as quickly as possible. The administration has been issued strict instructions to ensure there is no negligence whatsoever in the execution of relief operations.
Shinde fulfills his promise to farmers
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also commented on this significant government decision. He emphasized that the promise made by the government is being honored, regardless of the circumstances. Shinde stated that the government had already resolved to ensure that the festival of Diwali would not be dampened for the state’s farmers. In line with this commitment, it has been decided to deposit Rs 5,000 into their bank accounts. He further clarified that this is merely an immediate relief measure; additional financial assistance will be provided in the future to compensate farmers for their losses.
