Rs 300 More Expensive in Patna, Cheaper in Delhi-Mumbai: Check Today’s LPG Rates
Providing relief to the general public, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have once again kept domestic LPG prices unchanged. The rates for commercial cylinders have also remained stable.
If you are planning to get your gas cylinder refilled today, it is essential to be aware of the current LPG rates. As of today, Thursday, October 15, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have made no changes to the prices of domestic or commercial LPG cylinders.
In Delhi, a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is priced at Rs 939.50, while in Mumbai, it costs Rs 941.50 per cylinder. Meanwhile, in Patna, the capital of Bihar, a domestic gas cylinder costs Rs 1,031.50, and in Hyderabad, it is priced at Rs 994. This raises the question: why are LPG prices significantly higher in these two cities compared to other major metropolitan areas in the country? Let’s find out.
A Difference of Over Rs 300
On the first of October, the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders were increased by Rs 62.50 to Rs 71.50 across the country. Following this hike, the price of a commercial LPG cylinder in both Patna and Hyderabad crossed the Rs 3,000 mark. Commercial cylinders are cheapest in Mumbai, followed by Delhi.
The price of a commercial cylinder is lowest in Mumbai at Rs 2,764.50 per cylinder, followed by Delhi at Rs 2,810 per cylinder. Conversely, the price is highest in Patna at Rs 3,100.50 per cylinder, followed by Hyderabad at Rs 3,065 per cylinder. There is a price difference of Rs 300.50 between Hyderabad and Mumbai, and a difference of Rs 336 when compared to Patna.
Why do prices vary—lower in some places and higher in others?
The primary reason for this price difference is the cost incurred during transportation and distribution. LPG cylinders must be transported from refineries to bottling plants, and subsequently to local distributors. Cities like Mumbai, being coastal, are located closer to refineries or import terminals; as a result, gas arriving from abroad reaches these locations directly, saving on long-distance freight costs.
In contrast, cities like Patna and Hyderabad are landlocked—situated far from the coast. Consequently, the gas must be transported over hundreds of kilometers—via trains and trucks—from refineries or terminals to bottling plants. This additional transportation cost makes the LPG cylinders more expensive.
Furthermore, tax regulations vary from state to state. In Bihar and Telangana, local distribution charges and state-government-imposed entry taxes tend to be higher than in cities like Delhi or Mumbai. Additionally, dealer commissions and the costs associated with local infrastructure also play a significant role in determining the price of an LPG cylinder.
