Rising education costs in India—from coaching to college—are putting growing financial pressure on families beyond school fees.
The situation today is such that merely paying school fees is no longer enough; expenses for tuition, coaching, transport, uniforms, books, and eventually college fees have continuously driven up the cost of children’s education.
Rising Education Cost in India: In India, spending on children’s education has long been considered the most crucial investment. Families may cut back on other needs, but they are unwilling to compromise on their children’s studies. However, the reality now is that paying school fees is not the only expense; costs associated with tuition, coaching, transport, uniforms, books, digital devices, extracurricular activities, and eventually college fees have steadily increased the overall expenditure on education. Consequently, experts warn that families who fail to plan their finances in time could face significant economic pressure in the future.
Wide Gap Between Government and Private School Expenses
According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s ‘Comprehensive Modular Survey on Education 2025,’ the average annual expenditure incurred by a family per student in government schools is approximately ₹2,863, whereas in private schools, this figure rises to ₹25,002. The report indicates that, in addition to school fees, families incur substantial costs for books, stationery, uniforms, and transportation. Families residing in urban areas spend more on education compared to those in rural regions.
Rising Trend of Coaching Adds to Costs
Nowadays, private coaching is becoming increasingly essential alongside regular schooling. The survey reveals that more than one in four students attends separate coaching classes outside of school. At the higher secondary level, urban families spend an average of ₹9,950 annually on a student’s coaching, while the corresponding figure in rural areas is around ₹4,548. Since most students rely on their families to fund their education, these rising costs are directly impacting household budgets.
It’s Not Just Tuition Fees; Other Expenses Also Add to the Burden
Experts state that the true cost of education extends beyond mere school fees. Schools frequently levy additional charges for various activities, development fees, sports, and other programs. Furthermore, many families are continuously spending on laptops, tablets, internet access, online learning platforms, professional courses, skill development, and preparation for competitive exams. Given the evolution of technology and emerging employment opportunities, these expenses are increasingly viewed as necessities rather than optional extras.
Education Inflation Differs from General Inflation
Experts in the education sector note that many parents assume education costs will rise in line with the general inflation rate, whereas the reality can be quite different. They point out that expenses such as coaching, hostel accommodation, transportation, digital devices, and professional courses often escalate rapidly. Consequently, planning for the future based solely on general inflation rates is insufficient. For instance, if a professional course currently costs ₹20 lakh, rising education costs could make the same course several times more expensive in the future. Therefore, experts advise creating financial plans that take various potential scenarios into account.
