Researchers from the University of Florida and Japan's University of Electro-Communication have proved in a joint study that the microphones in smartphones and laptops can leak the sounds around you through electromagnetic signals. The surprising thing is that no kind of malware, hacking, or physical tampering is required for this.

Voices are captured from FM radio.
The research states that these signals can also be captured from common FM radio devices. The researchers conducted this experiment using a normal laptop and speaker, in which it was found that even while running everyday apps like Spotify or Google Drive, sounds can leak from a closed microphone.

With the help of AI, things can be heard clearly
The researchers were successful in recording sounds even from across a 10-inch thick concrete wall. Although these sounds were slightly distorted, AI tools like OpenAI transcribed them. Its accuracy was up to 94%, which is a very dangerous sign.

Threat to millions of devices
The research also warns that billions of consumer devices being used across the world are at risk. Users now have to understand that just shutting down the device does not provide security, but there is a need to be technically cautious as well.
