Research Fellowship Opportunity at NLSIU: Stipend of up to ₹2 Lakhs

The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru (NLSIU), has opened applications for its research fellowship programs for the January 2027 intake. A total of 20 positions are available across three fellowship categories, offering research opportunities in law, social sciences, public policy, and allied areas. These fellowships are contractual, and candidates from diverse academic and professional backgrounds are eligible to apply. Interested candidates can submit their applications until 5:00 PM on October 30, 2026.

NLSIU has announced three research fellowship programs for the January 2027 session: 10 positions for the Graduate Research Fellowship, 5 for the NLSIU Post-Doctoral Fellowship, and 5 for the University Research Fellowship. Each fellowship has specific academic qualification and experience requirements.

Who is eligible for these positions?

For the Graduate Research Fellowship, candidates must hold a graduate degree in law or a postgraduate degree in social sciences, public policy, or a related field. Candidates who have completed a PhD in law, social sciences, public policy, or a related field within the last three years are eligible to apply for the NLSIU Post-Doctoral Fellowship. However, candidates who have previously held a post-doctoral position at NLSIU or any other university are not eligible for this fellowship. For the University Research Fellowship, eligibility requires a PhD along with at least 10 years of teaching or relevant professional experience. Candidates must also possess a strong publication record.

Monthly Stipend of Up to ₹2 Lakh

The starting stipends for the three fellowships vary. The Graduate Research Fellowship offers ₹50,000 per month, the NLSIU Post-Doctoral Fellowship offers ₹1.20 lakh per month, and the University Research Fellowship offers the highest starting stipend at ₹2 lakh per month. According to the university, the final stipend amount will be determined based on the candidate’s academic background, qualifications, relevant experience, and suitability for the fellowship.

Mandatory Presence at the Bengaluru Campus

Candidates selected for this fellowship are generally required to be present at the NLSIU Bengaluru campus for the duration of the fellowship. However, the university has stated that, depending on requirements and the candidate’s circumstances, exemptions regarding campus presence may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
