Relief on LPG: 5.10 lakh new PNG connections activated; supply of 'Chhotu' cylinders doubled..
Gas Supply in India: Amidst the ongoing tensions in West Asia, the Government of India has assured the citizens that there will be no disruption in the supply of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas (LPG). The government has released new data regarding the supply of cooking gas within the country. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Ministry has clarified that there are adequate stocks of fuel in the country, and every possible step is being taken to maintain the robustness of the supply chain.
The Ministry stated that temporary relief measures have also been implemented to ensure the continued supply of LPG and other fuels. Kerosene storage limits have been increased, LPG unloading procedures have been streamlined, and new guidelines have been issued for LNG filling operations. The government also noted that the DAC (Delivery Authentication Code) system has now been implemented for up to 94 percent of gas cylinder deliveries; this measure is expected to curb irregularities and prevent black marketing.
Sales of 5 kg ‘Chhotu’ Cylinders Cross the 2 Million Mark.
According to the government, 100 percent supply of domestic LPG, PNG, and CNG is being ensured across the country. Since March 2026, over 2 million (20 lakh) small 5-kg gas cylinders (FTL) have been sold—a development that has proven particularly beneficial for migrant workers. The government has also doubled the supply of these cylinders to ensure that gas reaches those in need with ease.
Approximately 510,000 New PNG Connections Activated So Far
Rapid progress is also being made regarding the expansion of PNG services. Since March 2026, approximately 510,000 new connections have been activated, and the necessary infrastructure has been laid for an additional 256,000 connections. Furthermore, 577,000 individuals have already registered for new connections. Working in collaboration with various companies, the government is actively encouraging people to switch to PNG. Several companies are also offering promotional incentives for new connections. Additionally, state governments have been directed to expedite the process of issuing gas connections. Appeal Against Panic Buying
The government has appealed to the public not to engage in panic buying of petrol, diesel, or gas, and to rely solely on official information. Additionally, emphasis is being placed on promoting the use of alternative fuels, such as PNG and electric cooktops.
Indians Returning Home Safely
The government has also undertaken extensive preparations to ensure the safety of Indians residing abroad and to facilitate their repatriation. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, approximately 1.19 million passengers have returned to India from the region since February 28. The government has established helplines and control rooms in various countries, which are operational 24 hours a day. Indian embassies remain in constant contact with the people residing there, and every possible assistance is being extended to them. Arrangements are also being made to safely evacuate individuals through alternative routes, should the need arise.
