Big news for students preparing for exams: A recommendation to establish test centers in every district could reduce the hassle and expenses associated with traveling to other cities to take exams. Here are the details.

Students appearing for major competitive examinations in the country often have to travel to other cities to reach their designated test centers. This leads to additional costs for travel, food, and accommodation. A new proposal has now been put forward to reform the examination system, suggesting the establishment of at least one permanent, computer-based test center in every district across the country. If implemented, this would provide significant relief to many students.

Permanent Test Centers in Every District

A parliamentary committee associated with the Ministry of Education has recommended that the National Testing Agency (NTA) set up at least one permanent, computer-based test center in every district. The objective is to enable students to take their exams closer to home. Currently, many students are required to travel to other cities for examinations such as NEET-UG, JEE Main, and CUET, which consumes both their time and money. Students from smaller towns and rural areas, in particular, face difficulties in arranging travel and accommodation. Having a test center within their own district would alleviate these challenges.

Where Could These Centers Be Located?

The proposal suggests utilizing existing computer labs in government schools and educational institutions as test centers. There is a focus on evaluating and preparing the computer systems at Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, PM-SHRI schools, and government technical institutions for this purpose. These centers would require adequate computer facilities, internet connectivity, a reliable power supply, and necessary security arrangements. This initiative could also reduce dependence on private centers for conducting examinations.

Measures to Prevent Paper Leaks and Ensure Exam Security

The committee has offered several recommendations aimed at preventing irregularities and ensuring the security of the examination process. These measures include increasing the number of government-run examination centers, strengthening the security of question papers, and providing mock tests to help students practice taking exams on a computer. The committee has also recommended transitioning the NEET-UG into a computer-based examination. The objective is to make the examination system more secure and transparent.

How will students benefit?

If this plan is implemented, students may rarely need to travel to distant cities to take their exams. This would save on travel and accommodation expenses and reduce the stress of traveling on the day of the exam. Students from rural areas and smaller towns, in particular, stand to benefit from this.
