Airlines often levy arbitrary charges for passengers to select their preferred seats while booking flight tickets. Frequently, despite booking under a single ticket (PNR), family members are compelled to sit in separate seats. However, this will no longer be the case. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Civil Aviation implemented several new and stringent regulations aimed at resolving these various grievances faced by passengers. Issued through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), these new guidelines are set to make air travel more transparent, accountable, and convenient than ever before.

Curbing Arbitrary Practices Under the Guise of Web Check-in
The most significant relief provided under the new rules issued by the Ministry concerns seat allocation. Airlines are now mandated to offer at least 60 percent of the seats on any given flight to passengers without levying any additional charges (completely free of cost). This effectively means that you will no longer have to unnecessarily dig into your pockets just to select a standard seat on a flight. This initiative by the government aims to ensure that every passenger receives a fair and equal opportunity to choose a seat, while simultaneously putting an end to the arbitrary practices often associated with web check-in procedures.

Booked on a Single PNR? Families Will No Longer Be Separated
Sitting apart from children or elderly family members during air travel has long been a common and stressful issue. Taking cognizance of this difficulty, the new regulations explicitly state that if multiple passengers are booked under a single PNR, airlines must make arrangements to seat them together. Priority is to be accorded to allocating adjacent seats to all such passengers. This measure will alleviate passenger anxiety during the journey, allowing them to travel in peace and enjoy the experience alongside their loved ones.

Establishing Airline Accountability for Flight Delays
Passengers frequently face significant financial and mental distress when flights are delayed or abruptly cancelled. The government has now issued directives mandating strict adherence to the framework of passenger rights. Airlines are required to strictly comply with regulations in instances of denied boarding, flight delays, or cancellations. Furthermore, to raise passenger awareness regarding their rights, it has been made mandatory to prominently display these regulations on airline websites, mobile apps, booking platforms, and airport counters. Clear information regarding these rights will also be provided in regional languages to ensure that passengers from all walks of life can easily understand their entitlements.

Establish Clear Policies for Pets
The Ministry has also clarified its stance regarding passenger baggage. The procedure for transporting bulky sports equipment or musical instruments will now be made more transparent and passenger-friendly. However, this remains entirely subject to aircraft safety and operational regulations. Additionally, for passengers wishing to travel with their pets, airlines are now required to formulate clear and transparent policies to eliminate any scope for confusion or disputes during the journey.

Launch of 'Udan Yatri Cafes'
In a further initiative aimed at enhancing passenger convenience at airports, the government has launched a new facility known as the 'Udan Yatri Cafe.' The Ministry of Civil Aviation aims to ensure that air travelers have access to food and beverages at affordable rates. At these cafes, tea and water are available for just ₹10, while light snacks can be purchased for approximately ₹20.

This measure represents an effort to make air travel more accessible and affordable for the common citizen. Currently, these cafes have been launched at several airports across the country, with plans to expand their presence to additional locations in the future. Their numbers are specifically slated to be increased in high-traffic areas to ensure that the maximum number of passengers can benefit from this initiative.
