Rs 2000 Notes Updates: It has been almost two years since the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) discontinued the 2000 note, but 2000 notes are still being seen. Notes worth Rs 6,181 crore are still in circulation. This information was found in the official data released on Monday (June 2). According to RBI, 2000 rupee notes are still legal tender.
Let us tell you that 2000 notes are still legal tender, meaning that they have not been declared invalid. But, these are no longer being issued as new notes.
98.26 percent of 2000 banknotes returned
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 bank notes from circulation on 19 May 2023. RBI said in a statement, the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation at the close of business on 19 May 2023 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore, which came down to Rs 6,181 crore at the close of business on 31 May 2025. The central bank said, "Thus, 98.26 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation till 19 May 2023 have been returned." Where and how to deposit 2000 notes?
The facility to deposit and/or exchange these bank notes was available in all bank branches till 7 October 2023. Now this facility is available only in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank of India. RBI issue offices are accepting Rs 2000 bank notes from people and institutions for depositing them in their bank accounts from 9 October 2023. Apart from this, RBI also informed that people can send Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country through India Post to any RBI office to deposit them in their bank accounts.
