RBI Rule: There is welcome news for government pensioners. The RBI has issued directives stating that banks can no longer directly deduct excess pension amounts from pensioners' accounts. Here are the details.

Pension Update: For most people, the pension is the primary source of income after retirement, covering daily expenses and needs such as medical care. Naturally, it would be distressing if money were suddenly deducted from your bank account in such a scenario. However, there is no need to worry anymore.

There is significant news for government pensioners. The RBI has instructed banks that they cannot directly deduct excess pension funds from pensioners' accounts. The RBI took this decision to ensure that elderly pensioners do not face the inconvenience of sudden fund deductions.

Banks cannot deduct money without prior notice.

Often, excess funds are credited to a pensioner's account due to technical errors or delays in record updates.
Previously, banks would simply deduct the money directly from the account to recover the excess amount.
However, the RBI has now clarified that banks must provide notification before attempting any such recovery.
Furthermore, any further action can only be taken after obtaining the pensioner's consent.

Banks must issue a notice first.

The RBI clarified that if excess pension has been credited to an account, specific procedures must be followed.
The bank must first issue a notice to the pensioner.
This notice must provide full details regarding the reason for the recovery and the specific amount involved.
This ensures the pensioner is informed about why and when the money will be deducted from their account.
Additionally, the RBI has directed banks to obtain a written undertaking from customers at the time of opening a pension account.
This undertaking must clearly state that if excess pension is paid by mistake in the future, the pensioner agrees to return the funds upon being notified. Today's petrol and diesel rates are out; prices have crossed ₹115 in some places and ₹113 in others.

Pensioners should pay special attention to the following points:

Always keep checking your bank statement.
Do not ignore any notices or messages received from the bank.
Keep all your documents safe.
Contact the bank immediately regarding any pension-related issues.
Inform the bank immediately if money is deducted from your account.
Keep these points in mind to avoid any inconvenience.
