RBI News: A post is going viral rapidly on social media claiming that old ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, and ₹100 notes will be discontinued starting July 1. Here, you can find out the truth behind this news and what it means for you. Details regarding the government's stance on this issue are also provided here.

What is the whole matter?

The viral social media post is a poster featuring the Bank of Maharashtra logo. It clearly states that ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, and ₹100 notes will be discontinued from July 1, 2026. It further clarifies that not all notes are being banned; only those printed before 2005 will be withdrawn. The poster also claims that this is an official decision made by the RBI.

What is the truth behind the news?

When the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-checked the viral post, it was found to be false. On its official X (Twitter) account, the PIB—the government's authorized agency—declared the post fake, stating that the claims made in the Bank of Maharashtra notice circulating online are incorrect. Bank of Maharashtra (@mahabank) has issued no such notice. The RBI (@RBI) has also clarified that notes printed before 2005 remain legal tender and are not being banned. Along with this, the PIB has also appealed to people to remain cautious and rely only on official sources for accurate information.
