In India, the Food Department issues ration cards to the underprivileged under the National Food Security Act. These ration cards allow needy individuals to take advantage of government schemes and receive free food supplies. Only genuine needy people are eligible for these cards.

Different states provide different facilities for obtaining ration cards. Some states provide both offline and online application options, while others provide only offline services. The Government of India has set specific eligibility criteria for issuing ration cards. Here is how who is not eligible for a ration card:

Ineligible for ration card

To apply for a ration card, certain criteria must be met. Individuals owning more than 100 square meters of land including plots, flats or houses are ineligible. Owners of four-wheelers such as cars or tractors cannot apply. Families with refrigerators or air conditioners are also out of eligibility.

Also, families that have a member employed in a government job cannot obtain a ration card. In rural areas, a family's annual income must be less than ₹2 lakh, and in urban areas, it must not exceed ₹3 lakh. Anyone paying income tax, as well as individuals holding licensed firearms, are also ineligible.

Surrendering an Ineligible Ration Card

The Government of India is identifying individuals who have obtained ration cards through fraudulent means. If you have obtained a ration card despite being ineligible, it is advisable to surrender it. To do so, visit your local food department office and submit a written consent letter. This action can help you avoid any legal consequences. Failure to surrender an ineligible ration card may result in punitive action.
