Jharkhand Ration Card: A verification drive has been launched in Jharkhand for over 8 lakh ration cards. Authorities are verifying cardholders who have not collected rations for an extended period, and cards may be cancelled if irregularities are found.

Ration Card Verification: The Jharkhand government has taken a significant step regarding ration cards. A probe has begun into cardholders who have not availed the benefits of the scheme for a long time. The Food Department has identified lakhs of ration cards where no rations have been collected for months or even years.

According to the department, more than 8 lakh ration cards are currently under scrutiny. These cards are being verified, and they could be cancelled if any irregularities are detected during the process.

Why is the ration card verification being conducted?

The government states that this step is being taken to ensure ration cards reach genuine and needy individuals—particularly those whose applications for new cards or for adding names are pending. The primary objective of this verification is to identify inactive cards, fake cards, and cards containing incorrect information.

How many duplicate and suspicious cards have been found?

The investigation has revealed various irregularities, including the presence of duplicate and suspicious ration cards.

  • 21,750 duplicate ration cards have been found.
  • 12,284 suspicious ration cards have been identified.
  • A higher number of such cases has been reported in certain districts.

Whose ration cards could be cancelled?

The government has appealed to financially well-off individuals to surrender their ration cards by June 30. Strict action may be taken against those who continue to avail the scheme's benefits despite being ineligible. Consequently, if you have not collected rations for six months or a year, your name is liable to be removed from the system. Additionally, if you own a four-wheeler, possess five acres or more of land, or pay income tax, please surrender your ration card. If found ineligible during verification, you may be required to refund the value of the benefits availed under the scheme.

How to add a new name?

  • Aadhaar-based e-KYC is mandatory for adding a new member's name.
  • The name will be added to the ration card only after biometric verification.
  • No new member's name will be added without verification.
