The Government of India runs several schemes aimed at benefiting different sections of the population. Many people in the country are still struggling to meet basic needs, including food. To help such individuals, the Government of India provides subsidized ration through the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

People must have a ration card to avail the facility of low-price ration. Currently, in many areas, individuals have to visit the Department of Food and Supplies to avail this benefit and authenticate their identity using their fingerprint on the POS machine. However, in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has introduced a new system that allows certain individuals to receive their ration without fingerprint authentication. The Yogi government has changed the rules. Let's look at it in detail.

Ration through OTP

Lakhs of people in Uttar Pradesh avail various government schemes through their ration cards, including getting subsidized food grains. Until now, individuals had to visit their local ration shop and authenticate their identity using a fingerprint scanner. However, the Yogi Adityanath government has made a significant change for some individuals. Now, some people will not need to use their fingerprints; instead, they can get their ration through OTP (one-time password).

At the moment, this system is being introduced in Kanpur district, but it will gradually be implemented across the state.

Who will benefit?

The main purpose of this change is to help those who have difficulty using the fingerprint scanners on POS machines. Many elderly individuals or people engaged in physical labor, whose fingerprints have deteriorated, have difficulty authenticating their identity. The OTP-based system will eliminate this problem. However, this option is not available to everyone; it will only benefit certain groups such as the elderly or laborers, whose fingerprints no longer work on the machines.

What is the process?

Individuals whose fingerprints can no longer be identified will have to register their phone number at the district supply office by submitting an application. Once registered, they can receive their ration through OTP verification. Instead of using their fingerprints at the ration shop, they will give their mobile number. An OTP will then be sent to their phone, and after verifying the OTP, they will receive their ration.

This new system aims to make the process easier and more accessible for people who have difficulty using the fingerprint authentication system.
