The Railway Board's new pension rules include provisions for pension in the event of an employee's disability or death during service. Employees covered under the National Pension System (NPS) may also be eligible for family and disability pensions, subject to specific conditions.

If you work for the Railways or have a family member who is a railway employee, this news regarding pensions is important for you. The Railway Board has issued the Railway Services (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2026. These rules outline the pension benefits applicable if an employee becomes disabled or passes away while on duty. However, these benefits are available only if the injury, illness, or untoward incident is directly linked to the employee's railway service.

These new railway rules apply to employees covered under the Railway Services (Pension) Rules, 2026. Additionally, families of NPS-covered employees may also be eligible for family pension, disability pension, and a constant attendant allowance, subject to certain conditions and options.

When are disability or family pensions granted?

An employee may receive a disability pension if they sustain an injury, contract an illness, or if a pre-existing condition is aggravated due to their railway service. Conversely, if such an injury or illness leads to the employee's death, their family becomes eligible for family pension benefits.

Significantly, neither the employee nor their family is required to submit a separate application for this. The Head of Office will examine the case based on the Medical Board's report and forward it to the concerned authority within three months of receiving the medical report.

What benefits does an employee receive upon becoming disabled?

Under the new rules, an employee who becomes disabled will not necessarily be removed from service immediately. If the Medical Board deems them fit for less strenuous work, they may be assigned to a different or lower-level post, based on their preference and current position. However, in certain cases, a disabled employee remaining in service may be granted a lump-sum compensation instead of a pension.

Who will approve the pension?

The authority to sanction a disability or family pension has been vested in the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board or an officer not below the Senior Administrative Grade. Based on medical reports, rules, and other documents, the officer will determine whether there is a direct link between the employee's disability or death and their railway service.
