Railways: Railway Ticket Cancellation Rules to Come into Effect Soon, Key Changes Underway..
Indian Railways is preparing to implement significant changes to its rules regarding the cancellation of confirmed tickets. While an official date for the implementation of these new rules has not yet been announced, sources suggest that an announcement is imminent. Recently, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also hinted at these upcoming changes. Under the proposed new rules, passengers will receive refunds based on the timing of their ticket cancellation; consequently, canceling a ticket at the last minute could prove to be a costly affair.
According to the new framework, if a passenger cancels a ticket 72 hours before the commencement of the journey, they will receive the maximum refund, subject only to the deduction of a fixed minimum cancellation fee. If a ticket is canceled between 72 and 24 hours before departure, 25% of the fare will be deducted. If the cancellation occurs between 24 and 8 hours before the train's departure, 50% of the fare will be deducted. Conversely, no refund will be provided if a ticket is canceled less than 8 hours before the train's scheduled departure.
Which Passengers Will Be Most Affected?
The new rules will have the greatest impact on passengers whose travel plans are subject to frequent changes. Business travelers, passengers booking under the 'Tatkal' scheme, and families who book tickets in advance to secure confirmed seats but subsequently alter their plans are particularly likely to face financial losses.
In light of this, passengers must make prompt decisions regarding their travel plans; as soon as the possibility of a change arises, they should cancel their tickets promptly to minimize financial loss. Furthermore, passengers should refrain from booking multiple tickets across different trains as a backup strategy, as this could now prove to be quite expensive. In the future, should travel apps begin offering trip cancellation insurance options, opting for such coverage could also prove to be a prudent decision.
