Railways: Pregnant women get significant facilities during train travel; find out what the rules are..
Ideally, pregnant women should avoid traveling; however, if travel between cities becomes necessary due to urgent work, special provisions are available for train journeys. The Railways arranges specific facilities to make travel easier for pregnant women—information that not everyone is aware of. This is important because being allotted an upper or middle berth can cause significant inconvenience to a pregnant woman.
The Railways has designated lower berths across various coach classes to ensure a comfortable journey for pregnant women.
**Designated Lower Berths by Coach Type**
Specific lower berths are earmarked for pregnant women in different train coaches. In Sleeper Class, 6 to 7 lower berths are allocated; in 3AC coaches, approximately 4 to 5 lower berths are set aside; and in 2AC coaches, about 3 to 4 lower berths are designated. You can book your ticket specifically for these allocated lower berths to ensure you receive one.
**Booking Tickets for Pregnant Women at Counters**
To secure a lower berth specifically for a pregnant woman, you must purchase the ticket at a railway counter, as this facility is not available through online booking. You will need to visit a railway reservation counter and fill out a form providing details about the pregnant woman. Submitting this application increases the likelihood of being allotted a lower berth under a special quota.
You can also speak to the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) during the journey. By explaining your situation, you can request a lower berth from the TTE.
