If you travel by train and always go out with heavy bags, then be a little cautious now. Railways are now preparing to keep an eye on the luggage of passengers. Just like the weight of the bag is weighed at the airport, the same rule is now going to be implemented in trains as well. That is, you will have to pay a fine for carrying more luggage than the prescribed limit.

According to a news report on Money Control, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity in the Ministry of Railways, has made it clear that from now on, passengers will have to get their luggage weighed at the railway station. For this, electronic weighing machines will be installed, and if the bag is heavier than the prescribed weight, a direct penalty will be imposed. In the first phase, this system is being started at big stations like Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Kanpur, and Aligarh.

How much luggage can be carried in which class?

The rules of the railways were already in place, but now they will be strictly implemented. The limit of carrying luggage is fixed according to the class of each passenger. The maximum weight exemption will be given in First AC, and the minimum weight exemption in the General class.

Those travelling in First AC will be allowed to carry 70 kg of luggage, with an additional 15 kg exemption. If needed, up to 65 kg of luggage can be booked in the parcel van. A limit of 50 kg has been set for Second AC, with a 10 kg exemption. 30 kg more can be carried in the parcel van. Those travelling in Third AC and AC Chair Car are allowed to carry up to 40 kg of luggage. There is also a 10 kg exemption. 30 kg more can be booked in the parcel van.

Up to 40 kg of luggage will be free in the Sleeper class, with an extra 10 kg exemption. Up to 70 kg can be booked in the parcel van. General/Second class passengers can carry up to 35 kg of luggage, with a 10 kg exemption. Apart from this, up to 60 kg of luggage can be sent in the parcel van.

The size of the bag will also be fixed.

Not just the weight, the size of your bag should also be within the prescribed limit. Generally, the size of a trunk, suitcase, or box should not be more than 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. For AC third class and chair car, this limit is even less, 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. If your bag is bigger than this, then it will have to be sent by brake van, and a minimum charge of 30 rupees will be levied for this.

Children between 5 and 12 years will also get half the luggage allowance. Meaning they cannot carry as much weight as adults. Also, no one above 50 kg will be allowed. If a passenger boards with a big bag and blocks the way or causes trouble, then a fine will be imposed on them.

How much will be the charge for extra luggage?

If you have taken more luggage than the prescribed limit, then you will have to pay for it. As soon as the free allowance is over, 1.5 times the normal booking rate fare will be charged for extra luggage. At least 30 rupees will have to be paid, and the counting will start from 10 kg weight and 50 km distance. Railway officials say that these rules are necessary for the convenience and safety of passengers, especially during festivals or holidays, when trains are jam-packed with passengers.

A separate booking is necessary for heavy luggage
If you are carrying a scooter, bicycle, or any heavy luggage in the train, then it cannot be carried for free. For this, a separate booking will have to be done in advance. It is better if the luggage is more, then go to the railway parcel office and book it in advance. There may be a problem at the last moment, and you may have to face trouble in the journey.
