If you travel by local train, there is good news for you. You will now be able to travel in a safer manner than ever before. Indian Railways is designing the doors of local trains along the lines of the 'Amrit Bharat' trains; this initiative has already commenced with Central Railway. Gradually, similar coaches will be manufactured for other zones across the country as well. Consequently, commuting via local trains is set to become even more convenient.

According to Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer for Central Railway, the zone has received its first 12-coach non-AC EMU rake. The door-closing mechanism on this rake is automated—a significant milestone in enhancing passenger safety and security within suburban trains. Currently, this rake is housed at Central Railway's Kurla car shed. The rake features modern technology and a host of passenger-centric amenities. This initiative is specifically aimed at bolstering passenger safety in high-density local train networks, such as those found in Mumbai.

**Key Features of the Local Rake**

This rake is equipped with automated sliding doors that incorporate an anti-drag mechanism. This technology enhances safety by preventing accidental falls and deterring unsafe travel practices. Ventilation vents have been integrated into the doors (spanning 2-3 sections), ensuring a continuous flow of fresh air into the coach and preventing suffocation, even during peak hours when the trains are heavily crowded.

**Modifications Implemented**

*   Second-class coaches feature stainless steel seating, while first-class coaches are fitted with cushioned seating.
*   Wider windows have been installed to facilitate better ventilation and allow for greater natural lighting.

*   Roof-mounted ventilation units provide a fresh air supply of 10,000 cubic meters per hour—a capacity significantly higher than that offered by current technologies.

*   Now, trains will run at 'Rajdhani' speeds not just on the Delhi-Howrah or Delhi-Mumbai corridors, but also on these shorter routes—could this be the route you use?

**Enhanced Emergency Facilities**

This rake is equipped with a modified emergency alarm system featuring an external reset facility, allowing the alarm to be immediately restored without the need to physically enter the coach. Sliding doors and tubular partitions have been installed at several locations for emergency evacuation.

Wider staircases have been provided to facilitate better entry and exit.

This rake is equipped with a smoke and heat detection system, along with alert mechanisms in the driving cabs to ensure a quick response.

CCTV cameras have been installed in all passenger coaches to enhance safety and surveillance.
