Train Food Complaint: During long train journeys, passengers often rely on railway catering services or pantry car food. However, they are frequently served stale food or meals of extremely poor quality. There are also complaints about being charged more than the fixed price. Most passengers remain silent, wondering who wants the hassle of complaining, where to lodge the complaint, and whether it will yield any results. But if you receive bad food on a train, do not stay silent.

To enhance passenger convenience, Indian Railways has made its grievance redressal system faster, more modern, accountable, and transparent than ever before. You can now register a complaint within minutes without leaving your seat. The railway administration takes immediate, strict action against such issues; this not only curbs the arbitrary practices of vendors but can also lead to passengers getting a refund.

If you are served poor-quality or contaminated food on a moving train, the first step is to use the 'RailMadad' app or website. Visit railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in or download and open the RailMadad app on your mobile phone. Select the 'Food and Catering' option, verify your mobile number via OTP, enter your ticket's PNR number, and submit your complaint.

If there are internet connectivity issues on the train or you do not have a smartphone, you can call Indian Railways' universal helpline number, 139. Once connected, select the catering-related option to speak directly with a customer care executive, who will register your complaint in real-time.

The social media platform 'X' has also become a very quick and effective medium for lodging complaints with the railways. If you are served substandard food, immediately take a photo or record a short video clip of it using your mobile phone. Then, post a tweet tagging @RailMinIndia and @IRCTCofficial, including your PNR and train numbers. The Railways' social media wing takes prompt action on such posts on X.

The process and mode of receiving a refund for the poor-quality food depend entirely on the payment method used when the order was placed. If you booked the meal online via the official IRCTC e-catering app or website, you can claim a refund by navigating to the 'Order History' section of the app and clicking on 'Raise a Refund Request'.

If the cost of the meal was already included in your train ticket—as is the case with premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, or Vande Bharat—the refund procedure differs slightly. For these trains, once a complaint is lodged via 'Rail Madad' or other channels, the Railways conducts a thorough administrative inquiry. If the complaint is found to be valid, the Railways refunds the designated cost of the meal on a pro-rata (proportional) basis directly to the bank account used to book the ticket.
