Railway News: Train coach designs set to change! Railway Minister shares key details and lists the benefits..
Indian Railways remains the top choice for both passenger travel and freight transport. Indians share a special bond with the railway system; everything from the platforms and routes to the design of train coaches and freight wagons is deeply familiar to the public. Now, however, Indian Railways has made a major decision regarding the design of its wagons.
**Companies to Design Their Own Wagons**
On Wednesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a review meeting with senior railway officials. The Ministry of Railways has decided to allow companies to design freight wagons tailored to their specific needs. This means companies can specify the type of wagon they require based on their operational needs, and the Railways will formulate a new policy to facilitate this. Ashwini Vaishnaw has also directed the Railway Board to draft a new wagon design policy and initiate its implementation within the next 15 days.
**Wagons Tailored to the Cargo**
In recent years, Indian Railways has developed specialized wagons for transporting commodities like cement and salt. These wagons yielded excellent results, speeding up loading and unloading processes while ensuring safer transportation—features that were well-received by the industry.
The Railways is now set to introduce this new policy on a larger scale. Previously, commodities such as steel, salt, grain, coal, cement, and chemicals were often transported in standard wagons, leading to various logistical inconveniences. Moving forward, wagon designs will be customized to meet the specific requirements of different industries and types of cargo.
**What Are the Benefits of Changing the Design?**
According to the Railways, ongoing consultations with industries, trade associations, and major freight clients highlighted a key insight: if companies could access specialized wagons for loading, unloading, and transport, their operational costs would decrease, and workflows would become more efficient. Additionally, this move is expected to boost the use of railways for freight transportation. Indian Railways is nearing 100% electrification, which will reduce dependence on diesel and cut down on imports.
**Strict Standards for Approval**
Since specific binding arrangements are required for loading and unloading, companies may create their own designs; however, the responsibility for approving these designs and ensuring their safety will rest with the RDSO and the CCRS (Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety). Furthermore, the Railway Minister has stated that the safety and quality standards established for design approval and prototype development will be extremely stringent.
