RAC ticket holders on trains will automatically get a berth; they will receive a message on their phone..
As the number of train passengers rises, so does the crowd of travelers holding RAC and waitlisted tickets. These passengers often face significant difficulties during their journeys, frequently having to seek out the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) to check for berth confirmations. However, the Railways is introducing a new facility that will automatically allocate vacant seats to RAC and waitlisted passengers. Additionally, they will receive a notification regarding the allocation on their registered mobile numbers.
The Railways is upgrading its Handheld Terminal (HHT) system to fully automate the seat allocation process, offering greater convenience to passengers during their journeys.
**How the Automatic Seat Allocation System Works**
This new system will greatly benefit passengers holding RAC and waitlisted tickets. Once the TTE marks a passenger as 'unboarded' (absent) on the HHT device, the system will activate. It will then automatically allocate the vacant seat to the next eligible RAC passenger, in accordance with central server protocols. A confirmation message regarding the allocated berth will also be sent to the passenger's mobile phone.
**Live Status to Reduce Complaints**
The Railways believes that the use of 4G and GPS-enabled HHT devices will eliminate the scope for manual intervention by TTEs in this process. This will enhance transparency in seat allocation and reduce complaints regarding irregularities. Furthermore, passengers will be able to check the live status of vacant berths via the IRCTC portal.
The Railways is launching this new system as a pilot project, with plans to implement it across the entire network subsequently.
