The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways has identified 21 issues for examination during the 2026-27 financial year. Following this review, the committee may offer recommendations for necessary improvements within the railway system.
What will be examined?
The committee’s focus extends beyond train safety; it will also evaluate the facilities available to passengers at railway stations and the services provided on board trains. Additionally, processes related to ticket booking and reservations will also be subject to review.
The objective is to assess the current state of passenger amenities and identify areas that require improvement. At this stage, the committee has decided to proceed with an examination of these specific issues.
Focus on railway tracks and signaling systems?
To ensure safe travel, the committee will examine critical infrastructure, including the upgrading of railway tracks and signaling systems, as well as rolling stock—such as rail coaches and locomotives. Furthermore, the committee will assess the progress of projects involving the construction of new rail lines, the doubling of existing tracks, the status of road overbridges (ROBs) and road underbridges (RUBs), and initiatives to eliminate railway crossings.
Will the high-speed rail network be examined?
Projects related to the expansion of the railway network are also included in the committee’s scope of examination. The Union Budget 2026-27 announced the development of seven high-speed rail corridors spanning approximately 4,000 kilometers. The total investment for these projects is estimated at around ₹16 lakh crore. The committee will review the status of the high-speed rail network as well as the suburban railway network, including new projects and expansion plans.
