Central Government’s Special Drive to Promote Maternity Benefits: Register for PMMVY by August 15

In a major push to improve maternal and child health in India, the central government has launched a special awareness and registration drive for the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). This welfare scheme offers financial support of ₹5,000 on the birth of the first child and ₹6,000 for a second child if it’s a girl. The ongoing campaign aims to ensure maximum enrolment by August 15, giving expectant mothers a limited-time opportunity to register and secure benefits.

Special Registration Drive in Delhi

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has intensified efforts in Delhi and other regions by conducting door-to-door awareness and registration. Anganwadi workers and ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are actively involved in reaching out to eligible pregnant and lactating mothers. The campaign has been extended till Independence Day 2025 to provide wider coverage and ensure that no eligible woman misses out.

What is PMMVY?

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a central government-backed scheme designed to offer partial wage compensation to pregnant and lactating women. This helps ensure proper rest before and after delivery and encourages improved health and nutrition for both mother and child.

Under this scheme:

  • For first-time pregnancy, a financial benefit of ₹5,000 is offered.

    • ₹3,000 is provided at the time of pregnancy registration.

    • An additional ₹2,000 is disbursed upon registering the child’s birth.

  • If a woman gives birth to a girl child in her second pregnancy, she is eligible for ₹6,000 under the scheme.

Eligibility Criteria

To register under the PMMVY scheme, women must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be at least 19 years old at the time of registration.

  • Belong to a household with an annual income below ₹8 lakh.

  • Women who possess MNREGA job cards, receive PM Kisan benefits, or hold BPL, e-Shram, or Divyang (disability) cards are also eligible.

This inclusive framework ensures that women from diverse economic and social backgrounds can access the scheme and benefit from government support during critical stages of maternity.

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Success

According to the Ministry, over ₹19,028 crore has already been disbursed to more than 4.05 crore beneficiaries through Direct Bank Transfers (DBT) till 31st July 2025. This ensures transparency and prompt delivery of funds directly into the accounts of registered women via banks or post offices.

The government’s focused campaign, backed by grassroots-level workers, has proven instrumental in improving both awareness and uptake of the scheme. These efforts aim to reduce infant mortality, improve maternal health, and promote gender equality through increased support for the birth of girl children.

Why You Should Register Now

With the deadline extended until August 15, 2025, eligible women are urged to complete their registration immediately to secure benefits. The funds provided under PMMVY are especially helpful for:

  • Nutrition and health care expenses during pregnancy and after childbirth.

  • Offsetting income loss during maternity leave.

  • Encouraging safe institutional deliveries and improved maternal well-being.

In a country where maternal and child mortality remains a challenge, schemes like PMMVY serve as a crucial intervention in strengthening India’s public health and welfare framework.
