If you have an account in Punjab National Bank (PNB), then there is some relief news for you. The bank has removed the penalty for not maintaining the minimum average balance (MAB) on all its savings accounts from July 1, 2025. That is, now no penalty will be charged for not having the minimum balance in your account.

What has changed?

Like before, PNB also used to put a condition on its customers to maintain a minimum balance for different accounts. If the customers were unable to do so, a penalty of Rs 10 to Rs 2000 was charged from their account. This penalty used to be different in urban, semi-urban, and rural branches.

But now, from July 1, 2025, this rule has changed. PNB has announced that there will be no penalty for not maintaining the minimum balance in any savings account scheme. This rule applies to all customers and all locations.

Why was this decision taken?

PNB says that the objective of this step is to empower customers financially and connect them to the formal banking system. PNB MD and CEO Ashok Chandra said, This decision reflects our commitment to inclusive banking. We believe that removing such charges will reduce the financial burden on customers and they will be able to avail banking services with more confidence.

Who will benefit the most?
This change has brought relief especially to women, farmers, and people from low-income groups. Earlier, such sections found it difficult to maintain a minimum balance, due to which they had to pay fines repeatedly. Now this initiative of PNB will help these sections to connect to banking services without any financial pressure. The bank says that this step establishes it as a socially responsible and customer-friendly institution.
