PMO Eligibility: Landing a job at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO)—one of the country's most crucial and influential offices—is a dream for many young people. Officials working here are directly involved in the nation's policies and decision-making processes. But do you know how one actually gets a job at the PMO and what the salary is like? Let’s find out.
The UPSC Route
First, it is important to note that direct recruitment to the PMO is rare; most officials here are selected from other government services. The primary route to the PMO is through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination. Candidates who clear this exam become IAS, IPS, or IFS officers and may subsequently be appointed or deputed to the PMO based on their experience and competence.
Experience Matters
Additionally, officials serving in various central government ministries and departments are often posted to the PMO based on their strong performance. These roles include positions such as Section Officer, Under Secretary, and Joint Secretary. In some instances, specialists—such as economic advisors, technology experts, and policy analysts—are also appointed. These roles require higher education and relevant experience in the specific field. Furthermore, communication skills and administrative acumen play a vital role in working at the PMO.
What is the Salary?
Salaries at the PMO are determined by the specific position and the individual's experience. The starting salary for IAS officers is approximately ₹56,100 per month, which increases with experience. For senior positions, the salary can range from ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh per month. Salaries for specialists and advisors can range from ₹80,000 to ₹2 lakh or more, depending on their experience. Meanwhile, the salary for other positions, such as Section Officer or Assistant, can range from ₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400.
Benefits Beyond Salary
In addition to the salary, officials working at the PMO receive various government perks, such as official accommodation, medical facilities, travel allowances, and security. However, while working at the PMO is considered prestigious, it also entails significant responsibility. Working there requires a high level of confidentiality, discipline, and dedication.
