PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Over 50,000 Rooftop Solar Systems Installed Monthly in UP, Check Subsidy and Benefits

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of India's fastest-growing states in rooftop solar adoption under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. According to state officials, more than 50,000 rooftop solar systems were installed every month during March, April, and May 2026, setting a new benchmark in the implementation of the Centre's flagship residential solar scheme.

The achievement reflects the growing interest among homeowners in switching to clean energy while taking advantage of generous government subsidies, lower electricity bills, and the opportunity to earn income by supplying surplus power to the electricity grid.

The state government has also directed officials to accelerate installations further with the goal of making Uttar Pradesh the country's top-performing state in total rooftop solar installations.

Uttar Pradesh Steps Up Rooftop Solar Expansion

During a weekly review meeting held through video conferencing, Chief Secretary S.P. Goyal congratulated divisional commissioners and district magistrates for the rapid progress achieved under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

Officials have been instructed to ensure faster approval of solar loan applications, timely subsidy disbursement, and improved coordination with banks. Authorities have also been asked to activate inactive vendors and onboard new installation partners to expand the reach of the scheme across the state.

The government believes these measures will help more households adopt rooftop solar systems in the coming months.

Subsidy Available Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

The Central Government provides financial assistance to eligible households installing rooftop solar systems. The subsidy amount depends on the installed capacity of the solar plant and is transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank account after successful installation and verification.

The current central subsidy structure is as follows:

• 1 kW Solar System: Subsidy of ₹30,000, suitable for small households with limited electricity consumption.

• 2 kW Solar System: Subsidy of ₹60,000, designed to meet the electricity needs of average families.

• 3 kW or Higher Capacity: A maximum fixed subsidy of ₹78,000 is available for eligible installations.

These subsidies significantly reduce the initial installation cost, making rooftop solar systems more affordable for residential consumers.

Uttar Pradesh Offers Additional State Subsidy

In addition to the financial assistance provided by the Central Government, several states have introduced their own subsidy programs to encourage faster adoption of solar energy.

In Uttar Pradesh, eligible consumers can receive an additional state subsidy of ₹30,000. This increases the total financial assistance available for qualifying installations to ₹1,08,000, substantially lowering the overall investment required for a rooftop solar system.

The combined support from the Centre and the state government has become a major reason behind the rapid growth in rooftop solar installations across Uttar Pradesh.

Easy Loan Facilities to Encourage More Installations

To ensure that financing does not become an obstacle for households, the state administration has instructed banks to process rooftop solar loan applications within the prescribed timelines.

Officials have been directed to avoid unnecessary delays in loan approvals and fund disbursement. Faster financing is expected to help more families install rooftop solar systems without facing significant upfront financial pressure.

The government is also expanding the network of authorized vendors so that consumers have easier access to installation services across districts.

Lower Electricity Bills and Additional Income

One of the biggest attractions of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is the long-term savings it offers on electricity expenses.

Households installing eligible rooftop solar systems can receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month, depending on consumption and system capacity. This can lead to a significant reduction in monthly electricity bills.

Consumers who generate more electricity than they consume can also export surplus power to the local electricity grid through net metering, allowing them to earn additional income while contributing to clean energy generation.

Government Wants More Households to Join

The Uttar Pradesh government has also instructed officials to collect data on the actual savings achieved by households that have already installed rooftop solar systems.

The objective is to publicize real-life success stories and encourage more families to adopt renewable energy solutions. By showcasing lower electricity bills and additional income from surplus power generation, authorities hope to increase public participation in the scheme.
