The central government offers various schemes to meet the diverse needs of its citizens. Among these, many people grapple with rising electricity bills, especially during summers when there is more use of air conditioners, leading to increased power consumption.

To solve this problem, Prime Minister Modi announced a new scheme earlier this year, known as the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, which aims to make electricity bills zero.

Through this scheme, citizens can get subsidies to install solar panels, as well as avail free electricity. Let's find out how you can take advantage of this initiative.

Zero Electricity Bill

In January this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Under this scheme, the government will install solar panels on the rooftops of 10 million homes across the country, providing up to 300 units of free electricity.

Additionally, if the power generated by the solar panels is more than your consumption, you can sell the excess power back to the government. The government subsidizes the installation of these solar panels, which ultimately reduces the electricity bill to zero.

How much subsidy is available?

The amount of subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana varies depending on the capacity of the solar panel system installed. For a 1 kW system, a subsidy of ₹30,000 is provided, ₹60,000 for a 2 kW system, and ₹78,000 for a system of 3 kW or more.

How to apply for the scheme

To avail of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, applicants must first visit the official website pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The application process can be completed online by entering your mobile number, after which an OTP will be sent to verify your registration. You will need to provide the required details and submit the required documents including an Aadhaar card, proof of residence, electricity bill, bank passbook, passport-size photos, ration card, and income certificate.
