PM Modi's New Year Gift: CNG and PNG Prices to be Reduced Across India from January 1st; Find Out How Much You'll Save?
CNG PNG Price Cut: This is great news for millions of gas consumers in the country, as CNG and PNG prices are set to be reduced in the new year, benefiting ordinary consumers across India.
CNG PNG Price Cut: The new year 2026 is bringing such good news that millions of gas consumers in the country will be overjoyed. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has announced tariff rationalization, which will be implemented from January 1, 2026.
In a recent interview, PNGRB member A.K. Tiwari provided this information, stating that the new unified tariff structure will save consumers 2-3 rupees per unit, depending on the state and applicable taxes. He explained that this new tariff structure will result in savings from transportation to kitchen use.
Tariff Divided into Two Zones Instead of Three
The regulator has simplified the tariff structure by reducing the number of zones from three to two. Under the 2023 system, the tariff was divided into three zones based on distance: Rs. 42 for distances up to 200 kilometers, Rs. 80 for 300-1200 kilometers, and Rs. 107 for distances exceeding 1200 kilometers.
Now there will be only two zones instead of three. The first zone will apply to CNG and domestic PNG customers across the country. In simpler terms, under this new system, a rate of Rs. 54 has been fixed for Zone-1, whereas it used to be Rs. 80 and Rs. 107 earlier.
Benefits for Every Common Man
The new tariff structure will cover 40 City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies operating in 312 geographical areas of India. Tiwari says, "This will benefit consumers using CNG in the transport sector and households using PNG in their kitchens." The government has directed that the benefit of lower rates be passed on to ordinary consumers, and the regulatory board itself will monitor this. Tiwari said, "Our role in this business is to balance the interests of both consumers and operators."
What is the government's objective?
The government's effort is to provide subsidized and rationalized gas to promote the use of natural gas across the country. As a result, several states have reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) and simplified the permission process.
Speaking about the expanding reach of CNG and PNG infrastructure, Tiwari said that licenses have been granted to cover the entire country's gas network, including operators such as Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private companies, and joint ventures. He added that the PNGRB is assisting the government in this endeavor not only as a regulator but also as a facilitator.
