Millions of people await the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. To benefit small farmers who bear the burden of irrigation, seeds, and other costs, the government provides the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi three times a year in installments of 2,000 each. However, questions persist as to whether farmers who work as sharecroppers also receive the PM-KISAN installment. The most important condition of the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme relates to land ownership. The government identifies beneficiaries based on revenue records, i.e., the farmer's name on the cultivable land.

What is the PM-KISAN Scheme?
The livelihoods of millions of families in the country depend on agriculture. A large number of these farmers are small-scale farmers or subsist on sharecropping on other people's land. Amidst limited income and rising expenses, government schemes provide significant relief to these families. One such scheme is the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, under which eligible farmers receive financial assistance every year. Under the scheme, farmers receive an annual payment of ₹6,000 directly into their bank accounts in three equal installments. Twenty-one installments of the PM Kisan scheme have been released so far, benefiting millions of farmers.

Who benefits from PM Kisan?
Land ownership is crucial in the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. The government identifies PM Kisan beneficiaries based on land revenue records. Only those who own agricultural land are eligible for the scheme. If a farmer cultivates on a sharecropping basis and the land is not in their name, they will not receive the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi benefits under current regulations. Unless the land is owned, it is not covered under the scheme.

What benefits do sharecroppers receive from PM Kisan?
There are thousands of farmers in villages who cultivate other people's land. In return, they give a share of the crop to the landowner. These are called sharecroppers or bataiyas. They do the farming, but the land remains in the owner's name. Sharecroppers are not eligible for the PM Kisan Yojana. If a sharecropper has even a small piece of land registered in their name, they can avail themselves of the scheme's benefits based on their land. However, landless farmers are not included in this scheme.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?
PM Kisan benefits are available to those who have cultivable land in the revenue records. Small and marginal farmers whose family's primary source of income is farming. Bank accounts must be linked to Aadhaar and must have e-KYC. Land transfer and land verification based on land revenue records are also required. The government has not yet taken any steps to include sharecroppers in this scheme, and reports regarding this are misleading and baseless.
