In recent times, unseasonal rains and hailstorms have caused severe damage to farmers in several states across the country. Many farmers have seen their entire season's harvest completely ruined. Recently, reports of crop damage have emerged from states such as Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. If you are also a farmer facing crop losses, you should learn about the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). Under this scheme, you can claim compensation for your losses.

**What is the PM Fasal Bima Yojana?**
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is a specialized scheme administered by the Central Government. Launched in 2016, the scheme is implemented nationwide. Its primary objective is to provide financial security to farmers in the event of crop loss. Farmers are entitled to the benefits of crop insurance when their crops are damaged due to natural calamities; to avail of this, farmers must insure their crops.

**How are Crops Insured?**
Under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, insurance coverage is provided for various crops: paddy, maize, and pearl millet during the Kharif season; wheat, gram, and barley during the Rabi season; and commercial crops such as cotton, sugarcane, potatoes, and onions. The premium rates for this insurance are extremely low. The premium rates are set at 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for commercial crops.
To avail of these benefits, farmers can register themselves directly via the website https://pmfby.gov.in/. Alternatively, they may contact their nearest Common Service Center (CSC) or the local office of the Department of Agriculture.

**How to File a Crop Damage Claim**
A complaint regarding crop damage must be filed within 72 hours of the incident. To do so, one can call the toll-free number 14447, send a message via WhatsApp to 7065514447, use the 'Crop Insurance App', or submit a written complaint at the nearest agriculture office or bank branch. Once the complaint has been registered, a representative from the insurance company will conduct a survey of the affected field, following which the compensation for the damages will be disbursed.
