PM Free Bijli Yojana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' (PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme) in 2024. According to government statistics, this remarkable initiative by PM Modi has already brought electricity to more than 2.6 million homes.
Currently, North India continues to reel under the onslaught of severe heat. The scorching temperatures have completely disrupted daily life for the people. Moreover, amidst this blistering heat, the electricity department has also begun to show its erratic side, leading to frequent power outages. Consequently, people face numerous hardships whenever the power goes out.
The Magic of the Free Electricity Scheme
Under this scheme, households that have installed solar panels on their rooftops are experiencing a sense of relief and coolness, even during the peak summer season. This is because the intense heat no longer brings with it the burden of hefty electricity bills; people have found liberation from this financial strain.
When and How Was the Scheme Launched?
In February 2024, PM Modi announced a major gift for the citizens of the country. Under this scheme, the ambitious target has been set to install solar panels in 10 million (1 crore) households by the year 2027.
Major Relief from Electricity Bills
Through this initiative by Prime Minister Modi, millions of people have received significant relief from the burden of exorbitant electricity bills. With just a one-time investment, households can enjoy an abundant supply of electricity—with a 'Zero Electricity Bill'—for a period spanning over two decades.
Key Features of the Free Electricity Scheme
Under this scheme, the government is providing citizens with 300 units of free electricity. Furthermore, in addition to the free electricity, the government also offers a subsidy to households upon the installation of solar panels. Furthermore, PM Modi's government is offering subsidies of up to ₹60,000–₹78,000 for the installation of 1–2 kW solar panels (covering consumption of 0–150 units) and for 2–3 kW panels (covering consumption of 150–300 units).
How to Apply for the Electricity Scheme?
Applying for the free electricity scheme is extremely simple. To do so, you must first visit the website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in and select the 'Apply for Rooftop Solar' option on the homepage. On the subsequent page, select your State and Electricity Distribution Company (DISCOM), then enter your electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email address to log in. Once logged in, you can apply for an RTS panel by following the instructions provided on the form to obtain feasibility approval.
Following this, you can have solar panels installed on your home's rooftop through a vendor registered with your DISCOM. After the installation is complete, you will need to apply for a net meter, providing the details of the solar plant. Once the meter is installed, a commissioning certificate will be issued, enabling the government to disburse the subsidy to you.
